“Undarken me!..”

Diogenes the Cynical to Alexander the Great

In May 2006 Smaro Gregoriadou has contributed to the creation of CHORIAMBOS THEATER COMPANY as a result of her intensive research and work on the comprehension of ancient Grek drama’s inner content, and the revelation of its representative force for today’s “wounded” spectator. CHORIAMBOS TC was committed to commentary on contemporary culture, human nature and relationships by returning to ancient forms of drama and by manipulating universally archetypical symbols, such as rhythm, silence, body expression. The Company mainly explored the ritualistic essence of ancient forms of theatre and its application on today’s world and integrated traditional theatrical techniques with contemporary forms of dramatic expression in highly physical, emotionally charged and musically structured challenging productions.

CHORIAMBOS TC first production has been Sophocles’ Antigone, presented in original ancient Greek text by 2 performers-musicians (2007-08). It explored the musical tissue of Sophoclean poetry, leading spectators -regardless race, nation, language, cultural and social background- to an understanding of Greek drama’s humanistic concerns and their relevance to today’s world. It activated the ancient  function of such a plain scenic synthesis, as an actor (Aris Biniaris), who undertook all main roles, paired with a musician (Smaro Gregoriadou), who enlightened the pre-disigned inner musical movement of the actions; namely a theatrical analogy of the function of priest and chant singer

Antigone has shared more than 60 performances with Greek and international audiences and received a remarkably positive response.

CHORIAMBOS TC second production was Euripides Bacchae in ancient and new Greek. Its premiere has been given in 2010, in Athens.
